New Year, Same Mission
Things are looking up. I am pleased to report I have secured new housing for myself here in weird old Saint John, where I lived for nearly 20 years before moving to Ontario and then Halifax. I'll miss Halifax, and Nova Scotia in general, but not nearly as much as I was missing the kids. And I'll be back, as often as I can, to reconnect with friends and buy new zines and trade or sell old ones. Those of you who follow the socials already know that the journey back to NB started with me renting studio space with the Industrial Parks Collective. It now contains all of my publishing and much of my artmaking gear, plus a library of books about making comics and an archive of zines and comics made in the maritimes. Just like the PWYC studio when it was in Dartmouth, the studio and gear are available by chance or appointment for comics and zine makers to use. Message me to book a time. If you are interested in being a regular user of the studio I encourage you to get an IPC membership too.
I am also happy to introduce the PWYC Self-Serve Shop, which is "open" 24/7 outside of my studio, room 511 in the Yellow Door building at 123 Prince William Street in Saint John. If you are visiting the Yellow Door feel free to visit the Self-Serve Shop and grab a zine or comic. You can pay online later or not, depending on your circumstances. You can also contact me to book a time to visit. Once I am all finished with moving and new routines, I hope to have some pop up events for making comics and very likely a zine fair/print show as a fundraiser for this year's publishing. Thanks to those few humans and many AI agents who inquired about the recent indiegogo campaign; it was not funded, and that did not surprise me at all. I did learn some useful stuff and will probably try a more traditional crowdfund later this year with a specific publication (eg., an anthology) as the end result. I'll keep you posted. Thanks for making comics. Scott Marshall, artist/proprietor | |
One of our highlights of 2025 was the addition of a trio of zines by Halifax's Fern Pellerin, a recent graduate of the Center for Cartoon Studies! Check out Upstream, Creation Myth and Heave Away in the catalog!

When an inexperienced barista accidentally starts serving mysterious (and possibly mystical) latte art, their co-workers and customers are bewildered. But it isn't easy becoming a beverage celebrity overnight, and the pressure is on to keep pouring impossibly stunning coffees. "The Usual" is the most recent of five comics by Kate Phillips added to the BRB catalog. It won a 2023 Sequential award. Colour, 2023, 24 pages, $16. |
Black Rocks Books is a micropress and zine distro run by Scott Marshall. It exists to promote and celebrate comics and illustration created in Atlantic Canada (or by our expats and imports). If you have any issues or questions, please don't hesitate to contact me via email at paymentstobrb@gmail.com or ask in the BRB Discord. You can follow @blackrocksbooks on Bluesky. If you want to follow my art stuff as well you can follow @scottmarshall on BlueSky.
Black Rocks Books operates gratefully in Mi’kma’ki, the ancestral territory of the Mi’kmaq people.
We also acknowledge that people of African descent have been in Nova Scotia for over 400 years, and we honour and offer gratitude to those ancestors of African descent who came before us to this land.
This site is always under construction, and I am the tenth doctor of this life. Please bear with me.
